The short version

  • Nintendo announced Star Fox Adventures for GameCube Nintendo Classics later on September 9.
  • This is the GameCube adventure, not a newly announced remake or sequel.
  • The newer Star Fox separately receives a free multiplayer update on September 29.

Fox steps out of the cockpit again

Star Fox Adventures is joining Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics, with Nintendo announcing its arrival later on September 9. The Direct showed Fox exploring a dinosaur-populated planet alongside Tricky. This is a return of the GameCube game, not confirmation of a new Adventures remake or sequel.

That is the part worth emphasizing after so much conversation about what might come next. There is an existing adventure to play. Fox’s staff, the dinosaurs, and the change of pace from space combat are the reason this particular game has its own following.

A different kind of Star Fox

Adventures puts exploration on foot at the center of the experience. Someone arriving from the space-shooting side of Star Fox should expect a different structure, not simply another set of flight stages with new scenery.

That difference is also why bringing it back is useful. It gives players a way to try the series’ less conventional outing and decide for themselves what works. A rerelease does not have to turn into a promise of a future sequel to be worth discussing.

GameCube Nintendo Classics is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch 2. This announcement is about that library, not a standalone retail remake. Check your membership and the library listing before assuming the game is included in a different subscription tier.

A separate update for the newer Star Fox

Nintendo also announced a free September 29 update for Star Fox. Battle Mode gains local play for up to four players and three additional stages: Katina, Sector X, and Venom. Up to four players can also form a team on one Switch 2 to join online battles.

Those multiplayer additions belong to Star Fox, not Adventures. The two announcements share a series, but they serve different moods: an adventure with Fox and Tricky, or another round of competitive battles with friends.

Would you rather head back to Dinosaur Planet, or get a group together for the multiplayer update?
