Sony put a date on the end of new PlayStation discs
Beginning in January 2028, new PlayStation releases will be digital-only. Existing and pre-deadline disc games are not being remotely erased.

The short version
- Physical disc production ends for new PlayStation games starting January 2028.
- Games released on disc before then are outside the announced change.
- The policy removes a purchase format; it does not mean every old disc stops working.
What Sony said
Sony’s PlayStation Blog says physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will stop beginning in January 2028. After that date, new releases will be sold in digital formats through PlayStation Store and retailers. Sony says the transition does not affect games already released, or games scheduled to release on disc before January 2028.
That wording matters. “It’s over” captures the direction and the frustration, but it can also make the policy sound like a kill switch for every disc already in a collection. Sony did not announce that.
What actually disappears
Future buyers lose the disc as an install source, a lendable object, a used-market copy, and a competing retail price. Collectors also lose a relatively simple archival artifact. Some existing discs already need patches or servers, so physical has never guaranteed permanence, but removing the disc removes one layer of independence.
Warnings appearing on newer PS5 packaging are a visible consequence of the policy, not a second policy. The date and scope should still come from Sony’s announcement.
The NaizerBeam take
Sony is giving unusual advance notice, which is better than a quiet phaseout. The answer should be an equally concrete digital ownership plan: durable redownload rights, clear shutdown guarantees, competitive pricing, and a path for families to share a library without surrendering the account.
